COHA’s contemporary art explores a simple symbol, which everyone knows, and has already drawn once in their life: the circle. Beyond chiaroscuro, symbolized in the artists’ canvases by generous and powerful areas of black, it is also the philosophy of this figure which makes up all the symbolism of their works. Through the circle, COHA questions infinity, perpetual return and the quest for completeness, playing with the tension between absence and plenitude. The works transcend their apparent geometry to invite an interior journey, where the gaze, by dint of turning, ends up finding itself.
Inside the circle, time stops. We plunge into abstraction as into a protective dream.
The circle, silent and perfect, seems to capture the essence of time. Without beginning or end, it whispers eternity to us: a loop where each moment is reborn from the past moment. It is the symbol of the cycles that give rhythm to life. Day and night, the seasons, the heartbeat. Each point of the circle touches the ephemeral while belonging to the eternal.
However, at the center of the circle, there is a void: a still point, outside of time. Could this be awakening? This place where the hustle and bustle of the hours fades away, where the eternal and the ephemeral are reconciled.
Thus, the circle and time come together in the same lesson. Moving forward, not to flee, but to return to oneself, again and again, like a tide that tirelessly embraces the shore of being.
Stop in front of the concentric circles of COHA contemporary art at the Imperator hotel in Nîmes, or at Presta Art Gallery. Let time stand still. What will you see?
